Features & Benefits
The Actisenseâ„¢ OPTO-3 cable is an easy, safe and low-cost method of connecting an NMEA system to a laptop PC (and any other device with a standard RS232 9-pin port). Whilst protecting the most vital and expensive devices in the NMEA system, it also converts from the PC standard RS232 9-pin serial communications port to an NMEA 0183 (RS422) marine bus link.
In addition, the OPTO-3 cable and plug-case are fully shielded to offer a complete solution for system builders that require all components to be shielded (particularly in noisy and/or commercial environments).
The OPTO-3 cable is a bi-directional NMEA 0183 (RS422) to RS232 interface cable, that utilises full galvanic opto-isolation to protect the PC input, and "tranzorb" protection for the PC output. This provides comprehensive isolation of expensive PC hardware when connecting to an NMEA 0183 bus that may have picked up potentially hazardous voltages around the electrically noisy environment of a vessel.
No external power supply is required as the cable takes all necessary power from the RS232/PC port. Simple installation requires wiring the open end to the NMEA bus, and plugging the D-type connector into the PC, to start receiving the NMEA data - true plug'n'play functionality.
Tiny case design. All circuitry is contained within a robust standard D-type 9 pin connector for the optimal design size and cost. The case is also fully shielded and connected to the cable shield.
Galvanic Opto-isolated NMEA 0183 input. Isolates the NMEA 'talking' device supplying the data from the attached equipment's receiver (computer or radar etc.). This prevents the potentially damaging voltage or current spikes present in the electrically noisy environment of the vessel's wiring network from reaching the attached equipment's receiver, and also stops any problematic ground loops. Alternators, motors etc. can induce or conduct very large voltage and current spikes into the vessel's cables; computer ports (serial, USB etc.) are only designed to handle low voltage and low current signals.
TransZorb protected RS232 output. Prevents static spikes from the NMEA 0183 network damaging the attached equipment's transmitter (computer or radar etc).
Fast data Baud rate. Capable of data transfer rates up to 56k Baud.
Full duplex (two-way) communication. Using a full 4-wire interface, the attached equipment can receive the NMEA 0183 data transmitted by the NMEA 'talker' device (e.g. Depth sounder, NMEA Multiplexer etc.), and also send NMEA 0183 data back to the same NMEA device.
Note: This product is effectively an 'RS422 to RS232' adapter, and so cannot be used to re-program the Active Transducers. The USG-1-485 adapter must be used instead for the purpose of flash updating.
Fully NMEA 0183 compliant. Complies with all aspects of the NMEA 0183 standard communications protocol.
Self-powered. The adapter cable's internal circuitry is self-powered from the RS232 (PC) serial port - no additional power supply connection is required.
Twisted pair cable. 1.5 metres (5 feet) of high quality 4-core cable for noise interference cancellation / rejection. Cable is also shielded to create a superior noise rejection solution.
