When a person wearing a AU9 Personal Alert Unit (also called Personal Locator Beacon - PLB) surfaces from a ditched helicopter, SAR authorities and units can pick up its signal and determine direction and range to the missing person(s) enabling them to track, find and recover the survivor(s).
